259 Pre-Lecture Video Animations

Author narrated, these lectures introduce each chapter by explaining the basic concepts and learning objectives to be covered. Most also include embedded questions for student engagement. Faculty will find these videos and questions ideal for pre-lecture assignment material, especially for instructors who are flipping the classroom.

160 Chalkboard Videos

Created by the authors, these videos guide the student step-by-step to practical solutions like answers the student might reach during instructor office hours.

Vector Drawing Questions

This feature is one of the most important techniques developed in the course for solving problems involving multiple forces in the free-body diagram (FBD). Many problems in the force-intensive sections that take advantage of FBD capabilities are available online in WileyPLUS where students can construct and be graded on their FBDs

    Features Include

    • Adaptive Practice: Active retrieval of information with practice questions is proven to improve retention of information better than re-reading or reviewing the material, and students who use adaptive practice to prepare for exams do significantly better than those who do not. Students begin with a quick, section-level diagnostic to determine their initial level of understanding, and they can use the dashboard and quick reports to see what topics they know and don’t know
    • NEW Group Problems: Two new group problems have been added to each course section that are useful for group in-class activities.
    • GO (Guided Online) Tutorials: Author-created GO tutorials at the beginning of each course section use a guided, step-by-step pedagogical approach that provides students a low-stakes environment for practicing their problem-solving skills.
    • “The Physics of…” Examples: The current course version includes 40% more enhanced biological application examples. “The Physics of …” are bio-inspired examples like what pre-med students will encounter in the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems Passages section of the MCAT.

    Physics enhancements include:

    • Chalkboard Short Videos: 160 videos guide a student step-by-step through a practical solution for problems presented in the course.
    • Group Problems: New group problems have been added to each chapter and are useful for in-class group activities.
    • Biological Application Examples: “The Physics of …” are bio-inspired examples like what pre-med students will encounter in the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems passages section of the MCAT.

      Expanded Customization Capabilities:
Instructors can include their own questions, remove content, create course-specific content, or even make paper practice sets an algorithmic, auto-graded experience in their WileyPLUS course. Wiley now offers course and instructional design services for WileyPLUS users.
    • Guided Online Tutorials (GO): GO Tutorials are included in every course section. The GO Tutorials use a guided, step-by-step pedagogical approach.
    • Math Help Videos
    • Physics Demonstration Videos with Assessment Questions
    • Physics Concept Simulations
    • Problem-Solving Help Videos

David Young received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from Florida State University in 1998. He then held a post-doc position in the Department of Chemistry and the Princeton Materials Institute at Princeton University before joining the faculty in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University in 2000. His research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of high-quality single crystals of novel electronic and magnetic materials. Young is the coauthor of almost 200 research publications that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals and has received multiple teaching awards.

Shane Stadler received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from Tulane University in 1998. He went on to accept a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Naval Research Laboratory where he researched artificially structured magnetic materials. He then joined the faculty in the Department of Physics at Southern Illinois University before joining the faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University in 2008.
