In Organic Chemistry 4th Edition, Dr. David Klein builds on the phenomenal success of the first three editions through his skills-based approach to learning organic chemistry. The Klein program covers all the concepts typically covered in an organic chemistry course while placing a special emphasis on the skills development needed to support these concepts.

Students in organic chemistry need to be able to bridge the gap between theory (concepts) and practice (problem-solving skills). Combined with WileyPLUS, Organic Chemistry provides numerous opportunities for students to practice problem-solving skills development, including SkillBuilder problems, literature-based mid-level and challenge problems, and ACS style questions. Students are provided with an engaging experience that teaches the “why” and the “how” behind organic chemistry, enabling them to develop proficiency in the key skills necessary to succeed.

New SkillBuilder Learn the Skill Videos

Building on the success of the SkillBuilder videos for the “Apply the Skill” segment of his framework, David Klein has created 200 new SkillBuilder “Learn the Skill” Videos designed to complement the first part of every SkillBuilder in the course. Klein walks students through the steps of a worked example, so they learn this important skill before they move on to solving a problem.

Improved Assessment Opportunities:

The WileyPLUS experience provides many opportunities for practice and assessment with updated in-chapter and end-of-chapter questions, a revamped test bank for the 4th edition, assignable SkillBuilder activities, and expanded ACS-style questions. All assessment has been curated and reviewed by the author, providing a seamless textbook/WileyPLUS experience.

New Instructional Mechanism Lightboard Videos:

The key to succeeding in an organic chemistry course is to have a solid grasp of all mechanisms. WileyPLUS for the 4th Edition includes a video for each numbered mechanism in the text (over 100) created by Author David Klein using new Lightboard technology. Students see the mechanism unfold step-by-step, with the author showing them how to draw the resulting intermediate, and how to decide what happens next. The reason for each step is justified and explained, and regiochemical and/or stereochemical considerations are explored, providing students with the skills needed to master mechanisms.

Solved Problem Videos:

These videos guide students through the problem-solving process, giving them an opportunity to see the course author in action as he solves literature-based problems from the end of each course section. There are over 200 Solved Problem Videos in WileyPLUS.

What’s New

  • A New and Improved Digital Experience! Now available in WileyPLUS, the 4th edition offers more instructor control, improved assessment capabilities, assignable SkillBuilder activities, and improved ease of use for a better experience for both instructors and students.
  • Improved Presentation of Material: In the 4th Edition, author David Klein has focused on enhancing the level of detail throughout the text. Examples include expanding the treatment of molecular orbitals, mechanism boxes, and kinetic data, making content more comprehensible to students, and giving them more solid foundations for discussion.
  • Revised Interactive Problems: All WileyPLUS (both in-chapter problems and end-of-chapter problems) have been reviewed and revised personally by the author. The end of each chapter has been enhanced with additional multiple-choice questions that mimic the style of questions on standardized exams, including the ACS, DAT and PCAT exams.
  • Hundreds of Instructional Videos: Using lightboard technology, the author has created a wealth of video content available in WileyPLUS. These videos focus on mechanisms to provide students new opportunities to learn and understand reactions.
  • Real-World Applications: Organic Chemistry contains approximately 100 real-world applications integrated throughout its 27 chapters. Each of these applications has been reviewed and brought up-to date for relevance.

Additional Features Include

  • Adaptive Practice: Adaptive practice offers unlimited drill and practice focused on conceptual material, ensuring students are building their confidence and continuing to engage with the course material.
  • ACS-Style Problem Sets: Students benefit from experiencing practice and assessment questions that mimic the style of the ACS exam.

Instructor Resources

  • Instructor Companion Site: Includes electronic versions of the test bank, computerized test bank, and additional resources.
  • Solutions Manual: Contains complete solutions, prepared by the authors, for each question, exercise, problem, and case in the text.
  • PowerPoint Slides: The updated PowerPoint slides contain a combination of key concepts, images, and problems from the text.
  • Test Bank and Test Gen Computerized Test Bank: A fully revamped and updated test bank allows instructors to tailor examinations according to study objectives and learning outcomes

David Klein was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), where he taught organic chemistry from 1999-2017. He is currently a Fellow-by-Courtesy at JHU, and has since taught organic chemistry courses at Santa Monica Community College in Los Angeles. Having worked with thousands of students, he has intense first-hand knowledge of how they learn and the difficulties they encounter. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University and his PhD from the University of California at Los Angeles under the supervision of Professor Orville Chapman. Motivated by his experiences teaching organic chemistry as a graduate student at UCLA, Dr. Klein wrote Organic Chemistry as a Second Language (John Wiley & Sons, 2004, updated 5th edition published in 2020), which has become a highly valued student study resource. Dr. Klein has received numerous teaching awards at both UCLA and Johns Hopkins for his unique skill-building approach to organic chemistry instruction.
