NEW Alchemie Visualization Tools

Hands-on exploratory learning is critical for chemistry students. Alchemie molecular visualization tools, integrated within WileyPLUS, deliver immediate feedback to students as they explore content, gaining the deeper connections needed for long-lasting learning. These fully accessible interactives include a cutting-edge suite of drawing tools designed specifically for chemistry education, replacing Marvin Sketch and Reaction Explorer.

David Klein’s Skillbuilders

SkillBuilders are the hallmark of Organic Chemistry’s pedagogy and are assignable in WileyPLUS! New co-author Laurie Starkey brings her best classroom principles to the tried and tested SkillBuilder approach, including new pedagogically relevant photo examples that will bring the Skillbuilders to life to help address the disconnect in organic chemistry between theory and practice.

Expanded SkillBuilder “Learn the Skill” Lightboard Videos

Building on the success of the SkillBuilder videos for the “Apply the Skill” segment of his framework, David Klein has created many new SkillBuilder “Learn the Skill” Videos designed to complement the first part of every SkillBuilder in the course. Klein walks students through the steps of a worked example, so they learn this important skill before they move on to solving a problem. .

Instructional Mechanism Light board videos

WileyPLUS includes a video for each numbered mechanism in the text (over 100), created by Author David Klein using lightboard technology. Students will see the mechanism unfold, step-by-step, with the author showing how to draw the resulting intermediate, and how to decide what happens next. The reason for each step will be justified and explained, and regiochemical/stereochemical considerations will be explored, providing students with the skills needed to master mechanisms.

What’s New

  • New co-Author Laurie Starkey! Joining David Klein for this edition as an author is longtime collaborator Laurie Starkey (Cal Poly Pomona), whose classroom creativity, digital expertise, and positive teaching style bring a fresh perspective to Organic Chemistry and make the material even more accessible and engaging for students.
  • Substantial updates to the Organic Chemistry I chapters in content, SkillBuilders, visuals, and examples based on customer feedback. Emphasis on bringing diverse examples, creative illustrations, and practical applications for both Organic Chemistry I and II chapters to this edition.

David Klein is currently a Fellow-by-Courtesy in the Department of Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University, where he taught organic chemistry as a Senior Lecturer over three decades. He also more recently taught organic chemistry at Santa Monica Community College in Los Angeles. Having worked with thousands of students from a variety of backgrounds, he has intense first-hand knowledge of how they learn and the difficulties they encounter. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles under the supervision of Professor Orville Chapman. Motivated by his experiences teaching organic chemistry at UCLA, Dr. Klein wrote Organic Chemistry as a Second Language (John Wiley & Sons, 2004, updated 6th edition published in 2024), which has become a highly valued student study resource. Dr. Klein received numerous teaching awards at both UCLA and Johns Hopkins for his unique, skill-building approach to organic chemistry instruction. Dr. Klein is married with five children and two grandchildren, and he enjoys skiing and scuba diving.
